Nitrogen Laser
A high-voltage experiment I built with my dad when I was a kid.

A nitrogen laser uses a high-voltage discharge to excite nitrogen molecules in air. As they return to their ground state, they emit a short pulse of ultraviolet light.
Because the beam is ultraviolet and difficult to see directly, I added highlighter ink to a glass of water. The ink fluoresces under the laser light, making the beam visible.
The recording quality is very much of its time, but the experiment worked.
